Parcours Women in Transition July

28 June 2017

The Women in Transition team organized a session dedicated to professional interview mixing theory and practice. During the workshop we had the opportunity to participate into a real-life professional situation between 2 PWN Paris Members: from the actual interview to group feedback and suggestions.

As a first step, Martine Van Went & Catherine Brennan asked us to quote the most difficult questions we have met during a job interview.

Then they drew our attention that only 7% of our communication impact are linked to the words that we used. It’s linked to “Mehrahian theory” which indicated that 55% is related to our non-verbal acts (mental and physical posture - outfit included) and 33% linked to para-verbal (rhythm, tone of your voice). It means that 83% of our communication impact is not associated to what we said but how we said it. SO do not forget it !

We did a brainstorming regarding the key steps to know and to follow in order to be ready to succeed in any job interview:  to look for information regarding the company and the department which offers a position, to train yourself (how to introduce your professional path, skills etc, use story telling it’s quite impactful!), to find elements regarding the job position offered, to prepare a list of questions (missions, particularities, objectives, environment ).

Finally, we attended to a very interesting face to face job interview between one HR participant and another participant (who had an interviewed scheduled for the following day through Skype). For a Skype interview we noticed that we have to be attentive to some particular aspects such as: be ready 10 mn before the meeting scheduled and test your line and your Skype connection, choose a silence and quiet place, check your outfit (no dots and stripes…), have a neutral background as a white wall (no personal stuff should be seen), shut down your smartphone or any computer alerts.

During the last hour of the session we shared our comments, regarding verbal, para-verbal and non-verbal elements during this simulation.

In conclusion we found and developed together a right answer for each difficult question that we previously listed. So we will be more impactful, convince your audience and get the 2nd job interview!
